Remote supervision
Remote supervision is designed to support trainees to complete mandatory consultation-liaison requirements while in a rural or remote setting.
This page outlines how remote supervision works, the circumstances where it is allowed and how to make it happen at your health service.
How remote supervision works
Remote supervision is carried out by the principal supervisor, whose role is the same as for face-to-face supervision. Remote supervisors receive additional training to make sure they are delivering safe and effective supervision to remotely located trainees.
A supplementary supervisor may also be appointed, who can work onsite or remotely and who can fulfill the responsibilities of the principal supervisor if required.
Training posts offering remote supervision
Remote supervision can be conducted in training posts accredited and designated as suitable for remote supervision. The development and resourcing of these sites is the responsibility of the employing health service.
Initially, the service, DoT and BTC will review training sites considered potentially appropriate for remote supervision. The onus on developing and resourcing a site for remote supervision will initially fall to the employing service.
Generally, for a site to be designated as suitable for remote supervision, the training post will be a:
- generalist rotation in a MM4-7 location
- specific subspecialty rotation in an MM3 location.
Training sites must begin planning for remote supervision in advance of trainee allocation and the start of the rotation.
