Northern Territory
The Northern Territory (NT) features two primary training sites located in the Top End and Central Australia: Darwin (Royal Darwin and Palmerston Hospitals) and Alice Springs (The Alice Springs Hospital). Both sites provide exceptional opportunities to gain experience in Aboriginal and Transcultural Psychiatry, Remote and Rural Psychiatry, and the chance to work in remote communities across the NT.
Training rotations include diverse experiences such as Acute Adult Inpatient, Adult Community Mental Health, Consultation Liaison Psychiatry, Remote Outreach, Child and Youth Community, Child and Youth Inpatient experience, Addiction Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, Emergency Psychiatry including Crisis Assessment Mental Health Teams, Perinatal Psychiatry, and GP Liaison Psychiatry.
The NT offers training opportunities that support all stages of training (Stage 1, Stage 2, and Stage 3) as well as Advanced Certificates in various sub-specialties, including Forensics, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry, and Adult Psychiatry.
Prospective trainees are invited to have informal discussions with one of the Directors of Training in either the Top End or Central region, as well as with local psychiatrists.
We conduct interviews that serve both as a selection process for our accredited training positions and for the NT training program.
Please send your cover letter and CV to our central intake at ranzcptrainingnt.doh@nt.gov.au for consideration for intake and rotations. Rotations begin in February (Rotation 1) and August (Rotation 2). Intake outside of these periods can be accommodated on a case-by-case basis.

Victoria
Applications for the 2025 training year have closed. Visit First Year Psychiatry Training Match - PMCV for more information.
To be registered to commence training in Victoria, you need to be selected by the VPTC selection committee of the RANZCP and matched to an accredited training position at a Victorian Health Service.
Applicants need to apply to each Health Service they wish to train at:
- Services advertise first year registrar positions generally from May each year.
- Apply to the Victorian Psychiatry Training Committee (VPTC) via the Post Graduate Medical Council of Victoria (PMCV).
The PMCV matches the preferences of the applicants with the preferences of the Health Services, based on their interviews.
Candidates who are selected and matched to a training position are required to accept this within a 48-hour period.
Any selected applicants who have not secured a training position are informed of any vacant training positions and negotiate with those services to secure a position.
Anyone looking to apply to enter training for 2026, please contact vptc.administration@austin.org.au. to be added to a distribution list to be sent the updated application pack when it is released in 2025.
