Associate Professor Campbell Paul
A/Prof Campbell Paul is a Consultant Infant and Child Psychiatrist at the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne and Honorary Principal Fellow in the Department of Psychiatry at The University of Melbourne.
He has made an outstanding and pioneering contribution to infant psychiatry and transgender psychiatry over 40 years, both in Australia and internationally. In his role at the Royal Children’s Hospital, he has established with colleagues the Infant Mental Health Program, embedded in the Hospital Consultation Liaison Service, through which he has cared for thousands of sick infants and their families. He is also the Immediate Past President of the World Association for Infant Mental Health after having served a 4 year term as President and as a member of the Board of Directors for many years before that, and a Life Governor of the Queen Elizabeth Centre for early parenting, having served on the Board of Management since 1991. In his role as Principal Infant Psychiatrist at the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne, he has been a leading practitioner, academic and dedicated campaigner for promoting and progressing service and workforce development to support infant mental health. In 1992, he and two colleagues devised the postgraduate training in infant mental health through the University of Melbourne, the first of its kind in Australia, which grew into a Masters degree in Infant and Parent Mental Health and continues now as the Infant Mental Health Advanced Training - still the premier training program for infant mental health clinicians in Australia. A/Prof Paul established, in collaboration with endocrinologist Garry Warne and subsequently adolescent physician Michelle Telfer, the Royal Children’s Hospital Gender Service, the world leader in provision of gender affirming care to children and adolescents. He has been a vocal advocate in the public arena for young transgender people.
