New employment legislation in Australia – Respect at Work Act
24 Oct 2023
Update
In 2023 several key workplace relations and work health and safety (WHS) laws have come into effect in Australia, designed to better protect workers from physical and psychosocial hazards in the workplace.
The Respect@Work Act holds all personnel connected to an organisation responsible for preventing sexual harassment in the workplace. In the context of the College, this includes not only employees, but also RANZCP members (including those who may be involved in committees or other College work) as well as consultants and volunteers.
Workplaces play a critical role in creating a community that is free of violence against women: where women not only feel safe, but are respected, valued and treated as equals in their personal and professional lives.
How you can learn more
We encourage you to learn more about gender equity, and your responsibilities as a member of the College, by completing the Fair Work Commission’s free online short course below. Learn what workplace sexual harassment is, how it impacts those that experience and witness it, and what resources and support mechanisms are available.
You will also be able to reflect on the content in relation to your roles and workplaces that are separate to the College.
Fair Work Commission: Workplace Sexual Harassment Course (20 minutes)
And don’t forget, the College has published information and resources on gender equity in psychiatry, including our Statement of Commitment for Gender Equity and Action Plan and our RANZCP Discussion Paper: Gender equity and the College: Why does it matter?
Thank you for your cooperation in continuing to maintain a safe and respectful College workplace for all. Together, we can continue to foster a culture of excellence and success.
