Best Practice Resources Framework: Contemporary guidance for high-quality clinical practice

A Best Practice Resources Framework – developed to support the diverse and evolving information needs of psychiatrists across traineeship, career stages and areas of practice – is now available.

In 2022, the College commissioned an independent review to evaluate our approach to clinical practice guideline development. This review was guided by the Future Development of Clinical Practice Guidelines Steering Group.

The review culminated in a new direction for the College and the adoption of a Best Practice Resources (BPR) approach. BPRs can vary widely by type, topic, and specific purpose, but are fundamentally high-quality, evidence-based resources for the practice and improvement of psychiatry.

The Committee for Evidence Based Practice and Practice, Policy, and Partnerships Committee have worked with College committees to develop a guiding framework for BPRs.

The Best Practice Resources Framework will support an evolving suite of resources that are contemporary, transparent, and responsive to the information needs of psychiatrists, trainees, and the consumers of mental health care services.

For members, the framework provides flexible pathways to propose and support the delivery of high-quality resources relevant to their practice and expertise, whether developing a resource from scratch, seeking the College’s recognition of an existing resource, or adapting a resource for use in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.

The framework reinforces the College’s commitment to promote evidence-based practice, broaden clinical capability in psychiatry, and support the mental health of our communities. It aims to embrace collaboration with leading external organisations and experts to ensure appropriate, evidence-based psychiatric care.
