There has been significant media coverage recently of the mental health crisis in New South Wales, and the ensuing union-led activity proposing mass resignations of psychiatrists from NSW Health. 

This is a distressing situation for many of our members, and the College acknowledges how challenging this time is for all involved.

The College’s role has included ensuring that our members had the opportunity to connect with the union (ASMOF), as well as continuing to advocate directly to government ministers. We are intentionally leaving discussions about pay rates to the union, maintaining a clear distinction between the College’s advocacy and the union’s focus.

Dr Pramudie Gunaratne, Chair of the RANZCP NSW Branch, is representing the College in the media, and alongside Dr Angelo Virgona, Board Director and former NSW Branch Chair, engaging with the government in a measured, solutions-focused approach. Our core messaging covers the impact this workforce crisis is having on the community, the importance of having access to quality care, and equity of that access.
