Connect to mind, story and community: Launch of a new resource

The College is pleased to announce the release of a new informative resource to promote psychiatry. Available on the RANZCP website, the resource highlights the benefits of psychiatry from an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspective, outlining the Fellowship training program and the current supports available to trainees. The College is committed to supporting and growing our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workforce, and the development of the resource forms part of our ongoing commitment.

Developed to outline how psychiatry as a medical specialty is uniquely suited to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the resource hopes to inspire medical students and junior doctors to pursue psychiatry as a career. Featuring Professor Helen Milroy’s Dance of Life artwork, the resource highlights the importance of the mental, physical, and spiritual world in community. The resource also include current College members’ profiles, sharing their journeys to a meaningful career in psychiatry.

The College would like to thank the members of the Project Steering Group for their guidance throughout the development, as well as the members who have shared their stories with us.  The Project team is also grateful to those who have consulted and provided support on the project, including the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health Committee, the Psychiatry Interest Forum (PIF) Advisory Group, and the Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association.

We hope this resource inspires Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical students and prevocational doctors to pursue a career in psychiatry and welcome you to share it amongst your networks.

The RANZCP received funding under the Specialist Training Program (STP) and Psychiatry Workforce Program (PWP) for this project.
