Professor Sir Michael Marmot; Associate Professor Vinay Lakra

Professor Sir Michael Marmot has been Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at University College London since 1985, and is currently the Director of the UCL Institute of Health Equity.
He is the author of The Health Gap: the challenge of an unequal world (2015) and Status Syndrome: how your place on the social gradient directly affects your health (2004).
A Past President of the World Medical Association, Professor Marmot has led research groups on health inequalities for over 40 years.
He conducted the Strategic Review of Health Inequalities in England, resulting in the 'Fair Society, Healthy Lives' report for the British Government in February 2010. This was followed by the 'European Review of Social Determinants of Health and the Health Divide', for WHO Euro in 2014. In February 2020, Professor Marmot launched the ‘Marmot Review 10 Years On’, and in December 2020 he published 'Build Back Fairer: The COVID 19 Marmot Review'.
In 2000 Professor Marmot was knighted by Her Majesty The Queen, for services to epidemiology and the understanding of health inequalities, and he was appointed a Companion of Honour for services to public health in 2023.

Associate Professor Vinay Lakra
Associate Professor Vinay Lakra was the President of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) from May 2021 to May 2023.
Associate Professor Lakra became a RANZCP Fellow in 2007. He is the Divisional Director of Mental Health Services at Northern Health, Melbourne. Prior to this for over 10 years, he was a Clinical Director at North Western Mental Health, The Royal Melbourne Hospital. He is a member of the Victorian Board of the Medical Board of Australia. He served as the Deputy Chief Psychiatrist of Victoria for three years during 2016–19 and is a member of WPA Standing Committee on Scientific Sections.
Associate Professor Lakra graduated in medicine from JN Medical College, India in 1999 and then completed his MD in psychiatry from Central Institute of Psychiatry, India in 2002 before moving to Australia in 2004. He is also a Fellow of Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators, has a Masters in Health Management from University of New South Wales and is a Graduate of Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Associate Professor Lakra’s interest and expertise includes leadership and management; clinical governance systems; patient safety and quality; assessment and training standards for doctors; and supervision and mentoring of junior doctors and early career psychiatrists. He also continues to be involved in clinical practice in general psychiatry including electroconvulsive therapy.
Associate Professor Lakra joined the Board for a two-year term from May 2018. He was elected to the role of President-Elect of the RANZCP from May 2019 – May 2021, during which time he chaired the RANZCP Members’ Advisory Council and Audit Committee, and assumed the role of President in May 2021 until May 2023.
