Episode 8: Interview with Professor Henry Brodaty

In this interview, Brian Draper speaks with his colleague Henry Brodaty who in 1990 was the first person in Australia appointed to a Chair in Old Age Psychiatry (formerly Psychogeriatrics) at Prince Henry Hospital, Little Bay, through the University of NSW. Henry's work in developing the Prince Henry Hospital dementia carers program in the 1980s had enormous national and international influence in service development. Henry has always combined very high international quality research on dementia issues and old age mental health with his work as a clinician, teacher, administrator, and policy advocate. He received the Maddison Medal in 1977, the inaugural Ian Simpson Award in 1988 and the RANZCP Senior Research Award in 2003.

Henry Brodaty AO, MB BS, MD, DSc, FRACP, FRANZCP, FAHMS is a researcher, clinician, policy advisor and advocate for older people.  At UNSW Sydney, he is Scientia Professor of Ageing and Mental Health, Montefiore Chair of Health Brain Ageing, Co-Director of the Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing, and Director, Dementia Centre for Research Collaboration. He is a prolific researcher and a senior psychogeriatrician at Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney.

Previous appointments include President of the International Psychogeriatric Association, Alzheimer’s Australia NSW and Alzheimer’s Australia; Chairman of Alzheimer’s Disease International and NSW Branch RANZCP; and RANZCP Councillor. In 2000 he became an officer of the Order of Australia and in June 2016 received the Ryman Prize for the world’s best development, advance or achievement that enhances quality of life for older people.
